BEČ BIJELJINA was an international collaborative project that was opened on May 19, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the Gallery of the Cultural Center “Semberija” in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Hercegovina. The exhibition ran until June 16, 2023. It was curated by designer Aleksandar Todorović and artist Pavle Golijanin.
BEČ BIJELJINA fosters cultural cooperation between Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the field of contemporary artistic practices. Its aim is to facilitate the convergence and presentation of contemporary styles from artists in Vienna, a vibrant European art hub, in interaction with local authors from Bijeljina.
The exhibition brought together the works of 30 artists with diverse, conceptually strong, and highly innovative approaches, aiming to lay the foundation for international collaboration between Bijeljina and other major European cultural centers. Award-winning Austrian artist of international acclaim brought their work to the Balkan hinterland, this is the kind of cultural fusion that makes every European art lover’s heart beat faster. Many of the works were created exclusively for the exhibition, and a large number of the artists were present at the opening.

BIJELJINA is a bustling town located in the border triangle of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia at the mouth of the river Drina into the Sava. The inaugural exhibition BEČ BIJELJINA aimed to fuel the artistic and an intercultural exchange between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Austria, while also setting a spotlight on the regional South-Eastern European cultural scene. In addition to the exhibition, there was a one-week art residency that offered five of the 30 invited artists the opportunity to create their works on site.
Btw, BEČ is the name for Vienna in all official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It derives from the original Hungarian Bécs. Č is pronounced as CH as in chocolate or chair, check it out!
